The brain child of frontman Zach Rogue, Oakland, Calif.'s Rogue Wave debuted in 2003 with their self-released Out of the Shadow. Both the band and the record landed on Sub Pop's radar, and the influential indie-rock label reissued the album the following year. Having already drawn favorable comparisons to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, Built to Spill, Neutral Milk Hotel and even Elliott Smith, Rogue Wave continued to refine its sound both on the road and in the studio. 2005's Descended Like Vultures represented a subtle shift toward a bigger sonic statement, but with last year's Asleep at Heaven's Gate (which marked the band's move from Sub Pop to Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records), Rogue Wave seemed primed and ready to conquer the mainstream arena circuit.
