Known for his dexterous guitar picking, gritty, soulful vocals and a musical palette that effortlessly blends Appalachian-style folk, rock, reggae and even hip-hop, John Butler is a bona-fide sensation back home "Down Under." He released his first album, Three, in 2001, but it was 2004's Sunrise Over Sea that proved his breakthrough; the album was the first independently produced and distributed release to ever debut at No. 1 on the Australian charts. Butler - who was born in California but moved with his family back to his father's native Australia when he was 8 - went on to make an impressive splash on the American festival scene, where Sunrise Over Sea's jam-friendly roots-rock and pop sensibility fit right in with the Jack Johnson brigade. The John Butler Trio (which also includes percussionist Michael Barker and bassist Shannon Birchall) released their third studio album, Grand National, in 2007.
