Drawing from
such seemingly diverse sources as John Lee Hooker, Bob Dylan
and De La Soul, singer, songwriter, guitarist and harp-howler
G. Love (born Garrett Dutton) helped inject deep roots into the
modern rock world with early hits like "Baby's Got Sauce."
With its 1994 debut album, G. Love & Special Sauce (Dutton
plus standup bassist Jim Prescott and drummer Jeff Clemens) became
the first act signed to Epic Records' reactivated Okeh rhythm-and-blues
imprint. Since then, the combination of youthful attitude and
time-honored roots - exemplified by the trio's scruffily organic
interplay and the suave singer's slouchy slacker raps - has won
the group an audience that's as diverse as the group's myriad
stylistic influences. In 2004, the group hooked up with Jack
Johnson's Brushfire Records to release The Hustle, followed by
2006's refreshing Lemonade. Last year's A Year and a Night with
G. Love and Special Sauce captured the outfit's one-of-kind "Philadelphonic"
sound at its best: dished out in front of a live audience.
